Globalement, les perspectives autochtones sur l'autisme ont été largement négligées dans le milieu académique. Cette omission représente une lacune significative dans la compréhension qu’a le monde académique dominant des perspectives et expériences autochtones de l'autisme, compromettant ainsi les efforts visant à fournir des diagnostics, un soutien, des services et des recherches centrés sur la culture. Bien qu’un nombre croissant de travaux académiques abordent l’autisme et les peuples autochtones, une voix collective articulant les compréhensions autochtones et définissant les modalités de recherche pertinentes dans ce domaine fait encore défaut.  

Les objectifs de cet éditorial sont (1) de rassembler des chercheurs autochtones et non autochtones, autistes et non autistes, afin d’explorer diverses expériences, expertises, connaissances et compréhensions culturelles de l’autisme dans les communautés autochtones de différentes régions du monde et (2) de plaider pour une recherche sur l’autisme améliorée et significative, menée avec, par et pour les peuples autochtones.
