Le travail social joue un rôle essentiel dans le soutien des personnes autistes de tout âge. Qu'il s'agisse de faciliter l'accès à d'autres services, tels que le logement, d'améliorer la qualité de vie ou de jouer un rôle de protection, les travailleurs sociaux ont une responsabilité légale et morale de garantir que leur pratique permet une implication pleine et équitable des personnes autistes. Malheureusement, les preuves issues de la recherche indiquent que la pratique n'est pas toujours inclusive et peut ne pas répondre efficacement aux besoins des personnes autistes. Cet article complète les récents guides de pratique au Royaume-Uni et les recherches académiques sur le travail social et l'autisme. Il le fait en introduisant un cadre développé par des médecins autistes pour répondre aux besoins des personnes autistes dans les contextes médicaux, connu sous le nom de "Autistic SPACE", et en explorant comment il pourrait être utilisé dans les contextes de travail social. Les cinq besoins autistiques fondamentaux reconnus dans le cadre SPACE sont abordés : Sensoriel, Prévisibilité, Acceptation, Communication et Empathie. La manière dont une perspective pratique proche du travail social peut contribuer à développer davantage ce cadre est également examinée, étendant l'acronyme de SPACE à SPACES pour souligner l'importance de la Sécurité Sociale et du Soutien.
