Les recherches émergentes suggèrent que la ménopause peut représenter une transition difficile pour certaines personnes autistes. Cette enquête internationale co-produite a exploré les facteurs pouvant rendre la ménopause plus difficile pour les personnes autistes, tels que le manque de sensibilisation à la fois à la ménopause et à l'autisme ; de plus, nous avons cherché à identifier les types de soutien nécessaires aux personnes autistes et les moyens pouvant les aider à mieux vivre et même s'épanouir durant cette période. Nous avons utilisé une approche mixte pour analyser les réponses quantitatives et qualitatives de 508 participantes autistes. Les données quantitatives et qualitatives ont confirmé l’existence de liens entre le manque de sensibilisation à la ménopause et à l'autisme et les difficultés générales durant la ménopause. Les participantes autistes ont exprimé le besoin d’informations adaptées et spécifiques à l’autisme sur la ménopause, et ont perçu le manque de sensibilisation des cliniciens à la fois à la ménopause et à l’autisme comme des obstacles aux soins et au soutien. Enfin, les participantes ont rapporté avoir trouvé des moyens de mieux vivre et même de s'épanouir durant la ménopause grâce à une meilleure conscience de soi et à l'acceptation de soi. Une meilleure sensibilisation à l'autisme et un accès à des informations spécifiques à la ménopause pour les personnes autistes sont essentiels pour les aider à traverser cette transition.
