La pratique du camouflage social, ou la modification de ses comportements pour être mieux perçu par les autres dans son environnement, est ancienne. Récemment, elle a suscité beaucoup d'intérêt en ce qui concerne les personnes sur le spectre de l'autisme. La littérature sur l'autisme comprend des explorations sur la façon dont le camouflage social devrait être défini, pourquoi il se produit (par exemple, les pressions sociétales qui y donnent lieu), et ses impacts sur la qualité de vie et la santé mentale. Dans cet article, nous complétons ce travail avec un modèle conceptuel axé sur les aspects cognitifs réflexifs, qui fournit une analyse sociale de la manière dont le camouflage social a lieu, en ce qui concerne les coûts personnels et les gains sociaux potentiels. Ce modèle est basé à la fois sur l'expérience vécue des personnes autistes (M.G.) et sur les résultats des recherches actuelles. Nous espérons que ce modèle pourra servir d'outil pour autonomiser les personnes sur le spectre de l'autisme lorsqu'elles réfléchissent à la prise de décisions sociales au quotidien, et qu'il suscitera de nouvelles recherches pour comprendre les détails du camouflage social autistique, qui, à leur tour, pourront être utilisés pour affiner le modèle.
