Résumé/Présentation

La recherche sur l'autisme et la santé mentale a traditionnellement associé la mauvaise santé mentale et l'autisme comme inévitablement liés. D'autres explications possibles des problèmes de santé mentale parmi les populations autistes ont reçu peu d'attention. Comme le montre le mouvement pour les droits des personnes handicapées minoritaires, l'autisme est de plus en plus considéré comme faisant partie de l'identité des personnes autistes. Les individus autistes constituent ainsi une minorité fondée sur l'identité et peuvent être exposés à un excès de stress social en raison de leur statut social désavantagé et stigmatisé. Les auteurs testent l'utilité du modèle de stress des minorités comme explication de l'expérience des problèmes de santé mentale au sein d'un échantillon d'individus autistes à haut fonctionnement (n = 111). Les facteurs de stress des minorités, y compris la discrimination quotidienne, la stigmatisation intériorisée et la dissimulation, prédisaient de manière significative une moins bonne santé mentale, malgré la prise en compte de l'exposition générale au stress. Ces résultats indiquent l'utilité potentielle du stress des minorités pour expliquer l'augmentation des problèmes de santé mentale dans les populations autistes. Les implications pour la recherche et les applications cliniques sont discutées.
