Les approches pour comprendre et soutenir les personnes autistes au XXIe siècle ont évolué, passant de vues centrées sur l'individu, souvent à connotation négative, à l'acceptation du fait que les personnes autistes - comme toutes les personnes - existent en interaction avec leur contexte. De plus, les approches modernes ont adopté la neurodiversité, l'idée que toutes les personnes, quelles que soient leurs capacités neurocognitives, ont de la valeur, et mettent en évidence les façons dont un individu est façonné par son dialogue avec son environnement (1-4). Cependant, le monde n'est pas conçu en tenant compte de la neurodivergence, et lorsque les individus rencontrent des difficultés, celles-ci sont souvent pathologisées - et stigmatisées - à différents niveaux de l'expérience sociétale : public, interpersonnel et interne (Bottema-Beutel et al.).
