Cet article présente les concepts de « neurodiversité » et des « approches de la neurodiversité » vis-à-vis du handicap, et discute de la manière dont la confusion autour de la signification de ces concepts exacerbe les débats et les conflits liés aux approches de la neurodiversité. Par exemple, certains affirment que les approches de la neurodiversité se concentrent uniquement sur la société et nient les contributions des caractéristiques individuelles au handicap (une position controversée), tandis que cet article rejoint d'autres travaux en reconnaissant les contributions à la fois de l'individu et de la société au handicap. Il aborde également d'autres controverses liées à la neurodiversité, telles que l'incertitude concernant la portée des approches — à qui s'appliquent-elles ? — et leurs implications pour les catégories diagnostiques. Enfin, il fournit des recommandations aux chercheurs en développement qui souhaitent mener des recherches alignées sur la neurodiversité : il est conseillé aux universitaires d'étudier à la fois les individus neurodivergents et les contextes qui les entourent ; de considérer à la fois les forces et les faiblesses ; de reconnaître leurs propres biais ; et d'écouter et d'apprendre des personnes neurodivergentes.
