Il existe peu de recherches approfondies sur les personnes autistes à l'âge adulte, et encore moins sur les services et les soutiens les plus susceptibles de favoriser une vie adulte autiste épanouie. Cette recherche limitée est en partie due au fait que l'autisme est largement conçu comme une condition de l'enfance, mais cette orientation de la recherche résulte également de l'approche scientifique orthodoxe de l'autisme, qui conceptualise l'expérience autistique presque entièrement comme une série de déficits fonctionnels d'origine biologique. Aborder l’autisme de cette manière limite considérablement ce que l’on sait de cette différence neurodéveloppementale, la manière dont la recherche est menée et les services et soutiens disponibles. Dans cette revue, nous adoptons une stratégie de recherche alternative : nous appliquons l'approche des capacités de Martha Nussbaum, qui se concentre sur dix éléments fondamentaux d'une vie humaine épanouie, à la recherche sur les personnes autistes à l'âge adulte. Ce faisant, nous identifions les domaines dans lesquels les adultes autistes prospèrent et dans lesquels ils rencontrent souvent des difficultés, et mettons en évidence les problèmes auxquels les chercheurs, les cliniciens et les décideurs politiques devraient répondre. Le tableau qui en résulte est bien plus complexe que ne le suggèrent les récits conventionnels sur l’autisme. Il révèle également l’importance d’impliquer directement les adultes autistes dans le processus de recherche afin de progresser vers une véritable connaissance de l’autisme et de soutenir des vies autistes épanouies.
